With the majority of South Africans now returning to work in some form or another, it's more important than ever that we remain focused on proper hygiene. Samsung is here to help.
Samsung have an app for their wearables which is designed to help us keep our hands clean and virus free.
The importance of handwashing
A lot has been said about the precautions that companies have to put in place to ensure that their employees are as safe as possible. Ultimately though we all have to take personal responsibility and ensure we do what we can to slow down the spread of the virus.
Infections typically happen when the virus enters the mouth, nose or eyes. For this reason, one of the most important steps you can take to keep yourself safe is to wash your hands regularly.
According to research from the University of New South Wales, which was published in the Journal of Infection Control in 2015, people touch their face 23 times an hour on average. Almost half of these are in contact with the mouth nose and eyes.
Handwashing app for Samsung Galaxy Watch users
Samsung released their handwashing app in April and now that we're finally heading out of lockdown might be the perfect time to try it out if you own a Samsung wearable.
The app is available on the Play Store for the Gear S3, Gear Sports, Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Watch Active and Galaxy Watch Active21.
The app helps users keep track of how to wash their hands by giving you a timer so that you know when you've completed the recommended 20 seconds of handwashing.
This is in line with the change to WearOS, which has a similar feature. However, the Samsung app also helps you keep track of your handwashing habit over time.
Tips, tricks and timers
According to a 2020 study by University College London (UCL), washing your hands 6-10 times a day resulted in a lower risk of infection. That's a lot of hand washing that you need to remember to do while trying to get through your day's work.
The Samsung app will remind you during the day to wash your hands, and you'll be able to review your handwashing history from the app to ensure you don't start becoming complacent.
So if you already have Samsung wearable, you have no excuse for not washing your hands and doing your bit to slow down the spread of this virus.
