Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) arrested a police officer in Delft in the Western Cape on Monday 31 August for the alleged rape of his brother's girlfriend on Sunday 30 August 2020.
According to Ipid, a friend of the brother also allegedly raped his girlfriend on the same day. The friend was arrested by SAPS on Sunday.
POLICE OFFICER AND FRIEND ACCUSED OF RAPING BROTHER'S GIRLFRIEND
It is alleged that the victim was at her boyfriend's house on Sunday 30 August where they were apparently having an upstairs party at his double storey house.
The victim stated that she was drinking alcohol and at some point stopped drinking and decided to sleep in her boyfriend's room which is downstairs.
"The boyfriend's friend allegedly followed her to the room. It's alleged that when the victim woke up her boyfriend's brother, who is the police officer was on top of her raping her, the victim pushed him away and he walked out of the bedroom," said Ipid spokesperson Ndileka Cola.
"The boyfriend's friend, who was apparently in the same room when this occurred, grabbed her as she tried to reach for her cellphone with the intention of reporting the incident and he raped her as well, she hopelessly cried and screamed whilst he was raping her but no one heard her," added Cola.
The incident was reported to the Delft police station and the victim was sent to hospital for medical attention. The matter is set to appear before the Bellville Magistrate's Court on Wednesday 2 September.
WARRANT OFFICER SENTENCED TO 18 YEARS FOR RAPE IN SEPARATE INCIDENT
Warrant Officer Mhlobo Ishmael Mpela was found guilty and was sentenced to 18 years direct imprisonment last week by the Mthatha Regional court for a rape he committed more than a decade ago.
The allegation was that Warrant Officer Mpela was on night duty, posted in police cells where the awaiting trial inmates are kept, he was with his female counterpart. The investigation conducted by Ipid revealed that the suspect instructed the female colleague to attend to an accident.
"When she left he immediately went to a female cell called the victim under [the] pretense that she had a phone call. The victim who was an awaiting trial inmate was already sleeping when she was called," said Cola.
"The warrant officer instructed the victim to go to a storeroom, he followed her, closed the door and forced himself [on] the victim. The victim screamed for help but unfortunately, the CSC is about 30m from the cells and no one could hear and help her," said Cola.
The victim reported the matter the following morning, where it was brought to the attention of Ipid. The suspect was arrested by an Ipid official and was later released on bail.
"The matter was handled by the Mthatha Regional court which found the officer guilty and sentenced [him] to a period of 18 years direct imprisonment," added Cola.
