Two boys drowned at a construction site in Makwassie, North West police said on Wednesday
Provincial police spokesperson lieutenant colonel Amanda Funani said the boys, aged eight and nine, drowned on Tuesday.
“According to information at our disposal, a construction site outside Lebaleng township in Makwassie was transformed after heavy rains, causing holes to be filled up with water.”
She said seven young boys had gone for a swim in the water-filled pits, where the two children “got into trouble and drowned”.
When the other boys noticed that their friends were trapped under the water, one of them ran to the township.
He came across a police vehicle, flagged it down and reported the incident.
Police rushed to the scene and called divers, who retrieved the bodies, said Funani.
An inquest docket has been opened.
