As more and more of us return to work, wearing a fabric face mask for a full day will be part of our daily routine.

Since it will be part of our lives for the foreseeable future, you may want to consider a few adjustments to your daily skincare and makeup routine…

1. Choose the right mask

Whether you prefer plain black, traditional Shweshwe print or sequins, the fabric lining the inside of the mask is important when we're talking skin. Silk, satin or unbleached/white fabric like cotton or linen are best for your skin, but not all textures are equally comfortable on everyone's skin.

The primary aim is to find a natural fabric that feels smooth to the touch. It would be a bonus if the fabric is unbleached and not dyed, but this is less important.

2. Mask hygiene

Just like every other personal item, masks should be kept clean. If your mask is not visibly dirty and you choose not to wash it after every use, ensure that you carefully follow the manufacturer's instructions for reuse. If there is any visible oil, discoloration or product smudges on your mask, it needs to be cleaned.

Reusing unsanitary masks not only puts your health at risk, but is also likely to spread bacteria from your mouth, nose and skin.

3. Skin cleansing

Ensure that you double cleanse at night – which is simply to cleanse, rinse and repeat. While you may be physically protected from the elements and external factors like pollution and UV rays (yay!), bacteria is abundant in the oral and nasal cavities and you're also more likely to perspire under a mask.

4. General skincare

Adjusting your skincare routine might take some trial and error. Because of the long periods of physical cover you're likely to experience some skin irritation. The most common forms you'll see this manifest is either sensitivity (redness, tenderness, uneven texture and colour and swelling in severe cases) or bumps and breakouts.

To prevent and manage this it would be a good investment to add a soothing serum to your daily skincare routine. It will prevent and treat the most common signs of sensitivity and improve existing conditions. Derma-cosmetic brands like Avéne, Bioderma and La Roche Posay is a good place to start looking for soothing serums across all skin types.

5. Makeup

I've found foundation to be very messy and completely necessary under a face mask. Lipstick is an absolute nightmare and cheek products are also pointless, so what we're left with is eye makeup.

Ensure your brows are well groomed, but don't try anything groundbreaking if you're not skilled. If you know you shouldn't be trusted around a pair of tweezers, only pluck stray hairs that are more that half a centimetre from your actual eyebrows.

As all focus is on your eyes, play around with your eyeshadows and liners, and don't forget a couple of coats of mascara. The only thing I would add is a dab of under-eye concealer if you need it.
